The Aviator's Wife

by constantcomment, Phoenix, Arizona on 04-07-2013

Melanie Benjamin has written a powerful, enthralling story. It was a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the famous couple, Anne Morrow Lindbergh and her husband Charles. She was a daughter of wealth and privilege, and he a living legend, after his heroic flight in The Spirit of St. Louis, across the Atlantic. Writing in the first person as Anne, the author skillfully depicts a marriage comprised of dramatic highs and lows. The telling of this tale evokes enormous sympathy for Anne, as she struggled to fulfill her husband’s expectations. I felt her tingling sense of wonder at being chosen by this god-like creature, I mourned with her bottomless grief through the horrific kidnapping and death of their first born, I shared joy at his exceedingly rare expressions of love and pride in her. Though larger than life, and worshiped by an adoring public, Charles was a seriously flawed individual. Fearless, brilliant, yet seemingly lacking in empathy, his distorted vision of the world disastrously impacted his relationship with Anne. ‘Did Father ever cry?’, the children ask. Charles’s penchant for control and his absolute belief that his way was the only way were elements constantly undermining their marriage. Transported back and forth through several time frames as the story unfolds, the reader glimpses the erosion of trust, the shifting of priorities. It was exhilarating, though, to watch Anne’s sense of self emerge, as she comes into her own. Inner strength, confidence, a long over-due realization of her worth as a wife, mother, author and human being – all emerge to bring comfort and validation as she presides over Charles’s final journey. Malanie Benjamin’s snippets of everyday life were to be I am curious to know how this was received by the Lindbergh children. The author’s note at the conclusion states her hope, as a writer of historical fiction, that the reader will be inspired ‘to research these remarkable people’s lives further’. Absolutely!

hero worship

by pasmi00, Hillsboro, Oregon on 28-06-2013

Beautifully poignant, but very sad. Anne Morrow Lindbergh found her voice later in life after decades married to a hero. Very well written, it was hard to put down the book, even when I grew frustrated with Anne's reluctance to act for herself.

Summary
Despite her own major achievements--she becomes the first licensed female glider pilot in the United States--Anne Morrow Lindbergh is viewed merely as Charles Lindbergh's wife. The fairy-tale life she once longed for will bring heartbreak and hardships, ultimately pushing her to reconcile her need for love and her desire for independence, and to embrace, at last, life's infinite possibilities for change and happiness.
