Old Story gets New Life (Staff Review)

The Odyssey can seem like an intimidating or overly academic read, but in this modern translation, it is completely accessible to the modern reader and certainly worth your time. In her notes, the translator points out that this was an oral story told over time to groups of people. Its purpose was to enthrall listeners, and to be rhythmic and poetic. That is what this translation feels like. The stories are exciting and easy to follow, and the dialogue uses modern language, because as Wilson points out, the ancient Greeks didn't speak in high-brow Victorian English, so why would it be translated like that? In many ways, the translator's effort to not sugarcoat or academize the story helps to make it feel more relevant today. It's the story of a war hero coming back to a home life he no longer recognizes, a strong woman bound by patriarchal society to suffer, and a young pampered boy trying to live up to impossible standards. Odysseus is not so much the classic protagonist, but more of an anti-hero, prone to lies and violence as a means to dominate. Truth be told though, the central story itself left something to be desired. I appreciated its foundational value, but was never surprised or gripped by the plot. I guess writers have learned a thing or two about nuance in the last 2500 years. Still though, I recommend giving it a read or listen. - Paul, Forest Heights KPL
